Book Review: A Boy, His Bear and a Bully

Book Review¦ I’m always on the look out for books for my children – I can’t resist a bookshop or a good supermarket offer! Fun books are all good and well, but I really love it when they teach them something at their level. With Autumn starting school last month, I was worried about other children upsetting her. Most parents probably worry about that, as it’s the often the first time they’re not there to help their child in such situations. I wanted to find a way of introducing the idea of bullies to Autumn and how to deal with them, just in case. However, I wasn’t sure how to and didn’t want to make her worried. Then, I was offered a copy of A Boy, His Bear and a Bully by Katie Flannigan and P.J. Reece to review and I thought it looked just the thing. Here’s what we thought.

Book Review: Spikey by Tereza Anteneová

Review (gifted)¦ As autumn approaches, it’s an important time of year for hedgehogs as they prepare to go into hibernation. Indeed, it’s important to carefully check before you light the bonfire just in case some of our prickled friends have chosen it as a place to sleep for the winter! I’ve always been fond of hedgehogs and am keen to pass on the love to my 4 year old daughter, Autumn. We’ve recently read Spikey by Tereza Anteneová, which was a great opportunity for us to learn more about these fascinating animals. Aimed at 2-8 year olds, this book is supported by the charity Hedgehog Street, and “aims to encourage children and their parents to help save the hedgehogs by creating hedgehog-friendly gardens and discouraging predators”.

Book Reviews: Growing Pains & Where The Heart Is

Gifted¦ I have recently been sent two lovely books to read with Autumn that I’d like to share with you all. These are Where The Heart Is by Irma Gold and Susannah Crispe and Growing Pains by Alison McLennan and Melissa Johns. Everyone knows how important is is for children to have a good understanding of English, maths and science by the time they leave school. However, I think one of the most important things you can teach your child is to be kind. Both these books are aimed at 4-8 year olds and beautifully support that notion.

Review: My First Photo Book

Autumn loves looking at photographs of family around the room, in albums and on my phone. She smiles at the familiar faces, says who they are and prods at them. Of course, the problem with this is that all of these things are breakable and potentially harmful. I was recently asked to review the newly launched “My First Photo Book” by Photobox. This seemed like a great way of providing Autumn with photos of those most special to her in an appropriate format for her.
