Protecting rattan garden furniture over winter

Sponsored Post¦ Here we are at the end of September and there is a definite autumnal chill in the air. While there’s the occasional mild bit of sunshine it’s nice to sit in with a cup of tea, it’s definitely time to think about protecting your outdoor furniture over the winter. We’ve had a lovely rattan seating set since last summer, which I’m hoping will last a decent amount of time. It’s important to look after it well – and here’s how:

Cleaning

The first step you need to take is cleaning your furniture. Dirt can get caught between the weaves of the rattan, so use a hoover with a soft brush attachment. If there’s smaller debris that’s stuck, try using a toothbrush or a cocktail stick to shift it. Finish the job, by giving it a wipe all over with a cloth that’s damp with soapy water.

Storing

Once it’s clean, it’s time to think about storage. If you have rattan outdoor furniture like Skyline Design‘s beautiful artisan rattan range, good storage is essential to its longevity. There are three ways to do this.

1. Putting it away

Tidying away your patio furniture into a garage, shed or summerhouse is the ideal way to protect it from the harsh colder months. Make sure that you check that it’s still keeping dry periodically.

Take off any cushions and soft furnishings and put those away too after following their cleaning instructions.

2. Covering it up

After removing any soft furnishings, cover your rattan outdoor furniture with a waterproof cover. Make sure that the furniture is completely dry before you cover it. Once it is covered, make sure that there is air flow. You don’t want mould and mildew to develop!

3. Put it in a better location

If you’re covering up your furniture, or if you can’t for some reason, try to move your summer & winter garden furniture into a location that leaves it less open to the elements. If it’s on grass, try to move it onto a patio or hardstanding area. This will return in there being less moisture underneath it during the cold and damp months. Also try to keep it in a sheltered area, away from wind.
