Before you can drive your very first car, you must ensure that you have the appropriate insurance. Getting car insurance is a legal requirement, though you can use your judgement to choose the correct policy for you.

Whether you choose to get a car insurance from More Than or you want to look around a bit, it is definitely worth doing some research to make sure that you are getting the right coverage for you. There are plenty of insurance companies around, so make sure that you get a good deal. Another one worth checking out is One Sure, who guarantee the cheapest insurance – and they aren’t on comparison sites.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s what you need to know when making your decision:

What are the Types of Car Insurance?

There are 3 types of car insurance plan

The minimum coverage you will need is a third party insurance plan. This plan covers any damage you may do to another car or driver but doesn’t cover you or your car. You should also understand that if you are injured in an accident, you wouldn’t be covered but your passengers would be.

Third party plans don’t include theft so, if your car is stolen, it’s likely that you would have to replace it yourself. However, a third party, fire and  theft plan would include repairs or replacement of your car if it was vandalised, set on fire or stolen.

Fully comprehensive plans will cover you and your car as well as third party coverage. This type of insurance is more expensive but it does mean that if you get into an accident, you and your car will be covered. However, you will need to check each plan thoroughly as ‘fully comprehensive’ means different things to different companies. Where some will include things like windscreen cover or a courtesy car, not all will.

Which Factors Influence Your Insurance Quote?

When you are choosing your first car, it is well worth doing some research to find out which model would be cheapest to insure. As a new driver, your insurance is likely to be higher than average because you don’t have the same level of experience. There are actually lots of factors that can influence the cost of your insurance, including the vehicle type and age, who the named drivers are, your age, location and even your marital status.

Finding cheap car insurance is a top priority for most people. You might be able to reduce the cost of your car insurance in a number of ways from including other named drivers (or taking other named drivers off your insurance) to signing up for multi-car cover with your family. Another interesting factor to consider is the job title you choose for yourself. If there are multiple ways of describing what you do, you may want to get quotes using different titles to see if this makes a difference.

When you are choosing your car insurance deal, you must make sure that you have selected the plan that is right for your needs. Sometimes, this might mean spending a little more to reduce the excess or to include a particular feature such as a courtesy car or roadside assistance.

Do your research and consider your options carefully.
