7 Reasons You Should Start Playing Tennis

Sponsored Post¦ We may have snow in the UK this week. However, now that it’s March, spring and summer are just around the corner! Tennis is a great sport to get into as the weather starts to warm up. Similar games have existed for centuries, but tennis as we know it today was invented in Britain in the 1870s and has remained popular ever since! This isn’t too surprising when you consider that it’s fun, but good for you too! So, why should you take it up?

1. It’s good for your physical health

There are so many benefits of tennis for your physical health. It’s a great cardio exercise and gives you a full body workout, as you’re constantly moving and twisting. It can help to lower body fat and tone your muscles. It can help lower your heart rate, as well as improving your agility, flexibility and balance! Tennis can even help your body to prevent and fight diseases.

2. It’s good for your mental health

Tennis is a great stress buster! It helps your body to release a chemical called serotonin, which helps to stabilise your mood. This can help you to experience less anxiety and depression and be more resilient to stress. As well as your mood, it is also linked to your sleep patterns and digestive system. Learning to play tennis can also boost your confidence. Research carried out a few years ago showed that 64% of people said they felt more confident since playing and 60% said they felt happier since playing.

3. It’s a cheap way to stay fit

Unlike a lot of other sports, tennis is cheap to get started with. It’s also far cheaper than exercising at the gym – and arguably much more fun! Clothing wise, all you need is some trainers and comfortable, breathable clothing that you can move around in. Then it’s just a case of buying some tennis balls and a racquet, like these Head Tennis Rackets.

4. It’s fun and accessible for the whole family!

Tennis is an inclusive that all the family can get involved with, as even young children and pensioners can play! It is also an accessible sport – it can be adapted in many ways and wheelchair tennis is a thing! Why not have your own mini Wimbledon with family and friends this summer? Of course, strawberries and cream are a must while you’re spectating!

5. It can boost your brain power

Tennis involves a lot of fast thinking – you have to decide your next move quickly when there’s a yellow ball hurtling towards your side of the court! This helps to train your brain, improving your memory, critical thinking and mental alertness.

6. It’s very social

Tennis is a very social sport, as no matter what type you’re playing you are playing with someone. It’s a great way to socialise and meet new people.

7. It can be played all year round

A common misconception is that tennis can only really be played in the summer. However, there are indoor courts. This means you can play come rain or shine, hot or cold!

So what are you waiting for? You can find your nearest tennis court here to get started!
