Game Review: Let’s Learn to Read

(Gifted)¦ Finland are renowned for their excellent education. Let’s Learn to Read is part of Tactic’s new range developed with Finnish teachers. They develop their cognitive, physical and emotional skills without them even realising because they’re having so much fun. This Let’s Learn to Read game helps children aged 4-8 learn to read, while learning facts about a variety of animals both cute and creepy!

Setting Up

Part of the beauty of this game is that there is virtually no set up time at all. It’s just a case of each player choosing their collection frame and shuffling the cards. You’re not sat reading through rules for ages either, as it’s all pretty straightforward. In fact, if you scan the QR code on the box you can watch a 39 second video that shows you how to play!

Playing

The player lifts the top card from their deck and reads out the type of animal they have and its name. Some of the names are quite amusing! Then they choose one of its qualities and read its value. The other players then have to read the value of the same quality from their cards. Whoever wins the round puts one of the cards they won in their collection frame. The player with 4 cards in their frame first wins!

This is quite a short game, ideal for after dinner or a quick round during the day. It takes around 10 minutes with 2 players, or a little longer with more players.

Other things we like about this game

The bookworm token

It’s easy to keep track of who is the active player, as there’s a little bookworm token that moves from player to player as they take turns.

The variety of animals

While many of the animals are domesticated and regularly kept as pets, there are also some surprising ones in there. I didn’t expect to see an axolotl or a hissing cockroach in my deck! It’s a nice mixture of familiar and unusual animals for children to learn about.

The cards themselves

The cards are large but still a good size to hold. They’re bright, fun and inviting. All Tactic games are ecological, durable, safe and ethical. Impressively, they’re made with recycled cardboard at their very own factory in Finland.

On a side note, there is a Maine Coon card that looks exactly like our pet cat, Maisie! Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s one of our favourites.
