Collaborative Post¦ When you’re deciding what to wear, it’s easy to stick with what works. The classics are classic for a reason; it’s difficult to go too far wrong with a t-shirt and a pair of jeans, or a simple monochrome dress, for your day-to-day attire.
But there is a big gap between simply not going wrong and fulfilling your true potential when it comes to style. Closing the gap, in many cases, is mostly a matter of understanding the fundamentals and using accessories in the right way.
Focus on a Strong Base Outfit
To begin with, you’ll need an outfit that works. Only when you have the right foundations in place can you add all of the extra decorative elements that will elevate your look.
This means that you’ll need to get clothes that fit you properly. If the shape of your body has changed since you first bought your clothes, then it’s worth getting it adjusted. You’ll need options for every occasion and every change of weather. A good capsule wardrobe will often include little more than a decent pair of jeans, a plain white t-shirt, and a jumper or two. Look for items that are classic and neutral enough to be easily layered.
Layer Thoughtfully with Texture & Proportions
Once you have your foundational elements in place, you can start to build the rest of your wardrobe. Here is where you can listen to your own personal tastes and judgment. If you feel comfortable wearing a given item, and you feel like it matches with the rest of your attire, then the chances are good that you can ‘pull it off’.
Consider the different textures you wear. The way that you contrast various different leather, wool, or silk items, you decide to wear can be crucial. Your choice of materials might also have more practical implications. Faux fur, for example, is making a comeback and is perfect for those colder days.
Choose One Statement Accessory
Accessories are a powerful means of putting your own unique stamp on a given ensemble. On the other hand, it is easy to go overboard and risk overcrowding your outfit. A good approach is often to pick out just one or two items that can really be made to work with what you’re wearing. Quality silver jewellery is often a safe bet!
Pay Attention to Details
Getting the fundamentals right, as we’ve emphasised, is crucial. But at the same time, you’ll also want to be sure that you haven’t neglected the fine details. Take an extra five minutes in the morning to style your hair or set 10 aside at the weekend to paint and trim your nails.
