Nature Heroes: Dino Detective Trail at Wakehurst

PR – Tickets Gifted¦  We had a fantastic time at Wakehurst’s Nature Heroes: Seed Seeker Trail in October half term. We were delighted to be invited back to Wakehurst, (Kew’s wild botanic garden in Sussex), for their February half term trail. Their latest trail is dinosaur themed and involves identifying dinosaur poop, learning about dinosaur nests and digging for fossils! Our 4 year old son, Reuben, was so excited beforehand that he kept dancing as he chatted about it.

Nature Heroes: Dino Detective Trail

While not quite as hands-on as the previous Nature Heroes trail, Dino Detective still captured the children’s attention. They found it hilarious learning about dinosaur poop and enjoyed sitting in a dinosaur nest.

The route took us through some beautiful parts of the park, including past Wakehurst Place. It was just the right length to give the children a good amount of exercise without realising it. There were no complaints about aching legs or too much walking, thanks to the design of the trail and its activities.

We were very surprised by some of the noises that dinosaurs made. One of the activities was to listen to different noises and work out which dinosaurs they belonged to. However, some of the noises weren’t dinosaurs and it was surprisingly tricky! I was also stunned by a visual representation of how tall T-Rexes and Brachiosauruses were. It wasn’t just the children who learnt lots about dinosaurs; I did too!

The children enjoyed digging for fossils and drawing them, before receiving their badges. They’re such a cool design and can be applied to a Nature Heroes cape, available to purchase at Wakehurst.

Winter Garden

If you’re going to Wakehurst this week, I also highly recommend visiting the Winter Garden. This area has a beautiful array of plants of different heights, colours and textures which provide a real sensory delight through both sight and smell. As you meander through, the fragrance is lovely and not overpowering. Visually, I particularly enjoyed the juxtaposition of snowdrops surrounded by black mondo grass.
