Collaborative Post¦ Whether you’ve been a qualified driver for 10 days or 10 years, there’s always more you could be doing to improve your safety on the road. So many accidents happen as a result of careless driving. It’s not always a case of somebody’s skill behind the wheel. Often, it’s a case of somebody’s concentration or their mindset when they get in a car. If you want to ensure that you become a safer driver in 2019 then the following suggestions might just help to guide you in the right direction.
One of the best ways to be a safer driver in 2019 is to avoid driving aggressively on the road. This should go without saying, obviously, and we’re not suggesting that you currently drive crazily. But we can all do more to ensure we drive as defensively as possible. For starters, you can make sure you react to the road in a safe and responsible manner. You might be a good driver, but that doesn’t mean you should let your emotions get the better of you when you witness examples of bad driving. That’s how a situation escalates from being potentially hazardous to being a full-on incident.
This ties into the previous point, but we’re talking about more than your mindset whilst driving. You might be a very cautious and observant driver, but that doesn’t mean you’re immune to dangerous situations occurring on the road. The important thing to remember is that other people on the road might not be driving safely. If you want to be a safer driver in 2019 then you need to avoid those dangerous situations. Focus on your own driving, above all else, but make sure you keep your distance from any drivers who might be behaving recklessly. That’s how you’ll ensure a hazard doesn’t develop into an incident.
Obviously, being observant is an important way to ensure you avoid dangerous situations, but even the most observant drivers can find themselves in road accidents as the result of a sudden and unavoidable event. If such a scenario occurs whilst you’re driving safely then the crucial thing to remember is that you’re not to blame. But it’s essential that you get the details of the other driver, even if it’s just a minor bump or scratch and they try to play it off as no big deal. You might want to seek help from attorneys dedicated to delivering justice for their clients if you’ve been involved in such an incident. That way, you’ll get the compensation and closure you deserve. Moreover, you’ll make the roads safer for other drivers by ensuring that legal measures are taken with regards to the dangerous driver involved.
If you want to be a safer driver in 2019 then you also need to drive in the right state of mind. This is also linked to the initial point, but aggression is only one example of a negative mindset that can impede your ability to concentrate on the road. When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you have to take a second to check in with yourself. Do you feel anxious or stressed out because of the day you’ve had? If that’s the case then it might be worth taking 10 or 20 minutes to decompress and improve your mindset. It might not be illegal to drive a car whilst stressed out, but it can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol. At the end of the day, the reason it’s so dangerous to drive whilst intoxicated is that it slows your reflexes and lessens your focus. However, there are plenty of other times that our reflexes and concentration might be affected by our state of mind. If you drive whilst tired, for instance, then you’re putting yourself and others at risk. It’s worth stopping to take a rest. It could save lives.
Distractions should also be avoided if you want to ensure that you always drive in the right state of mind. Again, we’re talking about maintaining focus on the road. Your reflexes won’t be quick enough if you’re paying attention to your phone, and you certainly won’t be able to properly observe things happening around you. Make sure your passengers don’t distract you either. If you’re flustered because of things happening in your car then you’ll struggle to concentrate on the road, and this will negatively impact your state of mind. Obviously, you shouldn’t ban your passengers from talking or playing music. Just make sure everybody is respectful of the fact that you need to pay attention to the road. That’s how you’ll become a safer driver in 2019.
We’ve talked a lot about becoming a safer driving by improving your methods on the road, but you should also think about your actual vehicle. Maintaining your car is an important part of ensuring that you’re a safe and responsible driver. Even the best driver can put themselves and others in danger if they don’t keep their vehicle in good shape. Check the tyre pressure and oil levels frequently. Clean your car so that dirt doesn’t become rust and ruin the mechanics of your vehicle. Regular maintenance will keep your vehicle roadworthy.
As a final piece of advice, you might want to consider taking a defensive driving course if you’re really determined to become a safer driver this year. Even if you’ve already been on the road for years, it can’t hurt to refresh your knowledge and brush up on skills that might have slowly slipped away over time. Obviously, drivers gain experience as they spend more time on the road, but they often forget the more detailed aspects of their lessons. They forget to do stringent checks and often neglect to take a cautious approach to driving. Taking a course could help you to become a well-trained driver once again. Plus, you’d have years of experience under your belt, so you’d have a massive advantage over the younger version of yourself immediately after you passed your driving test.
